COVID – 19 Policies & Procedures

Facilities

  • Daily disinfecting of high-touch surfaces such as classroom shelving, materials, and our bathrooms will be implemented.
  • Mākua will provided a monthly Covid Waiver that asks for any out-of-state travel, contact with others who have covid symptoms in the last 30-days, as well as your current symptoms. All mākua, relatives and friends who are involved with drop-off and/or pick-up of your keiki will be required to complete this waiver once a month.

Before School Drop-Off

  • Parking will continue to be in the gated parking lot off of Waikapoki Rd.
  • Socializing on school grounds, including the parking lot is not allowed.
  • Wear your mask when dropping-off, and be prepared to socially distance yourselves from other families while waiting to walk your keiki into the classroom. Only one ʻohana in the papa at a time. If there is already an ʻohana in the papa, please help us by waiting your turn and social distancing from each other.
  • Siblings are not allowed to enter the classrooms at any time.
  • Keiki are not be required to wear a mask.
  • Temperatures of ALL persons entering the school campus DAILY will be taken with each visit – a temperature machine & sanitizer dispenser will be located at the classroom doorway for makua only.
  • Keiki temperature & hand sanitizing will be done by the kumu.
  • Once inside the papa, mākua are to sign-in with signature and arrival time.
  • Keiki will store their ukana in its appropriate place.
  • You and your keiki will make eye contact (to confirm your arrival) and greet your kumu for morning drop-off where you may say your good-byes.
  • To help minimize contact and exposure while dropping-off your keiki, we ask that you refrain from socializing, touching furniture, shelving, haʻawina or other keiki during this time.

After School Pick-Up

  • Pick-up parking will continue to be on the private road adjacent to the cemetery.
  • Remember social distancing when entering the gate and wear your mask.
  • We ask that mākua not enter Hoʻokipa, but wait at the entrance to sign-out and receive your keiki.
  • Socializing on the school grounds or on the private road/cemetery is not allowed.
  • As a reminder, we ask that ʻohana and keiki not socialize and/or play on the cemetery grounds (private property) out of respect for kupuna.

Staff

  • Our staff is committed, to the best of our ability, to the health and safety of our school keiki and ʻohana by limiting close interactions and socializing to our own families, school keiki and ʻohana.
  • Teaching staff working directly with keiki will wear masks while working indoors with keiki – masks for staff will not be required at the kula with outdoor activities.

Keiki and ʻOhana

  • We ask our school ʻohana to commit, to the best of their ability, to the health and safety of our school keiki, ʻohana and staff, by minimizing their socializing to their household, workplace and Kūlaniakea ʻohana.

Community

  • Kūlaniākea embraces our community as part of our school ʻohana. Please wear your masks at all times when working or playing in our community. Be vigilant in your social distancing, and share aloha at all times. Safeguard the health and wellness of everyone, from keiki to kūpuna. Aloha ke kahi i ke kahi.

Visitors & Campus Vendors

  • Only necessary persons will be admitted – we will avoid these situations to the best of our ability. If admission is necessary, all persons will be required to sign into a Visitor Log Book, complete a Covid Waiver, temperature screened, hand-sanitizer and a mask worn before entering the premises. Campus visitation by interested ʻohana will discontinue until further notice.

School Meals

  • Lunches: Keiki will be required to provide their own daily home lunches.
  • Kamaliʻi Snacks: Snacks will continue to be on a rotating weekly schedule provided by our school ʻohana. (Please check the Snack Schedule on the Makua Portal) To minimize exposure, we are asking ʻohana to provide packaged foods (crackers, popcorn, string cheese, and uncut fresh fruit, vegetables, steamed ulu, uala, etc) If in doubt, please contact your kumu for questions or suggestions.
  • Hiʻilei Snacks: Mākua will provide their own keiki morning & afternoon snacks.

Handwashing

  • Handwashing for keiki, ʻohana and staff is a critical component in minimizing exposure and maintaining our health.
  • Demonstrate and share the importance of thorough hand washing procedures with your keiki often, just as we do in school.

Keiki, ʻOhana or Staff  Showing Signs of Illness

  • Daily temperature screenings of keiki, mākua and staff will be taken upon entering the school campus. Anyone showing signs of an elevated temperature will not be allowed on campus.
  • If your keiki or anyone in the household shows any signs of illness or Covid symptoms, (see symptoms listed below) notify the school immediately – please do not have your keiki attend school. Notify your pediatrician immediately for testing recommendations.
  • Notify the school immediately if you or anyone in your household has been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for Covid – please do not have your keiki attend school.
  • A Covid notification to the school will automatically necessitate an email to all ʻohana in being transparent and keeping everyone safe. Confidentiality will be maintained with all email.
  • If the ill person tests positive for Covid, whether it be makua or keiki, contact the school immediately. The school will then notify all ʻohana that there is a confirmed case of Covid-19 within our school ʻohana. Appropriate closure notification will follow immediately – please do not have your keiki attend school.
  • A positive test for Covid will require the entire ʻohana to quarantine for a minimum of 5 days, and require a Negative PCR Test for keiki before returning to school.
  • If a staff member or a child exhibits COVID-19 symptoms (see list of symptoms below) while in school, they will be isolated in a safe space and communication/preparation will be made for them to leave campus immediately, followed by an email notification to all ʻohana.
  • Staff and keiki will be required to contact their doctor or pediatrician and return with a Negative PCR” Test.
  • In a confirmed case of Covid-19, the school will close for a minimum of 2 days to clean and disinfect the facilities as required by the Department of Health.

Covid and Traveling

Upon your return to Hawaiʻi, from the U.S. Continent, please prepare to safely quarantine yourselves from others who come into contact with the kula. In particular, those in your household, including your keiki.

  • Currently, the state of Hawaiʻi currently requires a 5-day quarantine period for travel from the U.S. and its territories for those not fully vaccinated or do not have a Negative Pre-Travel test result. The kula is asking that anyone who has traveled, including keiki, self-quarantine until they are able to take a Negative PCR Test, before returning their keiki to school, regardless of vaccination status or Pre-Travel testing.
  • Inter-island travel does not require a vaccine card or pre-test. With that being said, we request that you and/or keiki. proceed with a Covid PCR Test upon your return so we may continue to keep all of us safe and healthy.

Kūlaniākea has chosen to take extra precautions, beyond those recently established by Hawaiʻi Safe Travels Program.
